Senator Max Baucus – Again Arresting Doctor’s & Nurse’s !

Five single-payer protestors arrested Tuesday, May 12, 2009

By Ken Strickland // MSNBC

Five protesters were arrested this morning at a Senate hearing on health-care reform. The protesters — some, who identified themselves as doctors and nurses — were be charged with “Disruption of Congress,” according to the Capitol Police spokeswoman. The Senate Finance Committee hearing was a roundtable discussion between senators and experts on the best way to pay for health-care reform.

As the hearing opened, about 25 women, who identified themselves as nurses stood up, turning their backs to the senators. Taped to each of their red shirts were signs that called on Congress to pass what’s called a “single-payer system,” a system in which the government alone would run health care — no private insurance.

“Nurses say patients first,” the signs read. “Pass single payer.”

After standing silently for about five minutes, the nurses walked out of the hearing in an orderly fashion. They were not escorted by police. But shortly after the group left the hearing, more vocal individual protest began. A person stood up and in a screaming or loud voice, called for Congress to pass the single-payer system.

“We want guaranteed health care,” one said. “We’re tired of private insurance.”

Within a minute or so, a police officer escorted the protester out of the room and arrested them in the hallway. This sequence was repeated four more times, ending with the arrest of each individual.

We want a seat for single payer – Senator Baucus said We want more police!

Arrests on Capitol Hill over Single Payer Health Care Issue

Healthcare-Now // by – Katie Robbins Assistant National Coordinator

I was one of the Baucus 8 in Tuesday’s demonstration at the Senate Finance Committee Round Table on health care. It was a meaningful and empowering action to be a part of, and I am awed and humbled by the response from single-payer supporters around the country.

Hundreds of people have written and donated to Healthcare-NOW! to thank the group for standing up for the single-payer supporters in this nation. We were proud to represent you in a direct confrontation with the Senate and Chairman Max Baucus about their exclusion of the only health reform that is truly universal and guaranteed to contain costs.
We want a seat for single-payer at the table – Baucus said We want more police

All 8 were arrested and charged with disorderly conduct/disrupting a congressional hearing. We will meet again for our arraignment on May 26th. (Read the whole story)

One immediate action you can take now is to call the Senate Finance Committee and ask them to include Marcia Angell, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School, in Boston, Massachusetts and former editor of the New England Journal of Medicine. Physicians for a National Health Program recommends her as a wonderful advocate to be included in the third and final Roundtable discussion in the Senate Finance Committee on May 12th.       (202) 224-4515

Senator Max Baucus tells a BIG lie – Ask him why?

This is what the Senator had to say to the protesters after having the police arrest them!

baucusSen Max Baucus: Let me say this. I think I speak for everybody on the committee and everybody in the Congress… deeply, deeply respect the views of all members of the audience and of all Americans who feel deeply about health care reform, especially those who are worried about single pay system, public option, who really do fervently believe that is the proper result. That is a view that many people have. It’s a view which I respect. There are other approaches to health care reform which also I respect. The whole point of this hearing and other hearings is to try to determine the best route, the best option, in determining how to best reform our country’s health care system. So for those of you who remain in the audience who may be inclined to stand up and, out of order, to state your views, I encourage you to not do so, because I want you to know that I personally care deeply about your views. I deeply respect your views. I hear what you say. I talk to a lot of people in my home state of Montana who have the exact same views. I represent 900,000 of the world’s best bosses, Montanans, and many of them have the very same view. But we aren’t going to get the best result here… the more we can have an orderly discussion of how we should best reform the health care system. So I want to say to everyone, especially those of you who might be inclined to stand up, that I urge you not to so we can proceed with the hearing holding your views also deeply in mind as we proceed. Thank you.

Apparently the single payer views must have been held very deeply, hidden in the minds of the Senators and the witnesses, since at no time during the hearing was single payer discussed as an option for reform.

It is one thing to respect the views of those who support a model of reform that actually would provide all necessary health care for everyone and make it affordable for each and every individual, but it is quite something else to restrict the discussion to options that cannot ever achieve those goals.

This hearing represents the the framework of reform that is being crafted behind closed doors. The tragedy is that any bill that results from this process will delay further the reform that we desperately need. In the meantime, tens of millions or more will face unnecessary physical suffering and financial hardship, and many will die.

Senate finance committee hearing on health care reform has single payer advocates arrested!

The Senate finance committee hearing on health care reform is a JOKE!   A travesty to our so-called democracy… !   The most popular and most cost effective proposal for real reform is being excluded from consideration.    And, we all know why!

Doctors, Single Payer Activists Arrested, Make History at Senate Finance Roundtable …by Donna Smith

Maryland doctor Carol Paris is taken into custody

morepolice1It has finally happened right here in the United States. Citizens who believe healthcare is a human right have been arrested and are being processed like criminals through the Southeast District of Columbia police station. Their crime? Asking for single payer healthcare reform – publicly funded, privately delivered healthcare – to be discussed during the Congressional hearings on reform.

Doctors Challenge Exclusion of Single-Payer from Health Care Debate

It’s a pretty spectacular display of raw political power,” said Russell Mokhiber of Single Payer Action. “The health insurance industry demands that not one of the fifteen people who testified today shall be a single payer advocate. And the industry gets what it wants. It’s time for the American people to storm the gates and demand – put single payer on the table.”  (read the whole story)
